Beef is a nutrient-dense protein that is great for babies once they start solids. When cooked gently and shredded, it blends beautifully into rice porridge, providing iron, zinc, and protein, all essential for healthy growth.
For babies, beef chuck or beef shank are ideal. These cuts are naturally tender when simmered, easy to shred, and have enough fat to keep the congee flavorful without being greasy. beef brisket is another option, though it requires slightly longer cooking to reach soft, baby-friendly texture.
When paired with carrot, beef congee becomes a warm, comforting meal that’s easy for babies to swallow. Carrots add natural sweetness, beta-carotene (vitamin A), and fiber to support digestion.
All of these ingredients are gentle on the stomach, making this congee a nutritious choice for early meals.

Age: 7+ months
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 20–25 minutes
Texture: Smooth creamy porridge
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons uncooked white rice
- 1 cup water
- 2 tablespoons cooked beef, finely shredded (beef chuck, shank, or brisket)
- 2 tablespoons steamed carrot, mashed or finely chopped
- 1–2 tablespoons warm water, breast milk, or formula (optional)
Optional additions:
Mashed sweet potato
Finely chopped spinach
Soft tofu
Instructions
1. Rinse the rice
Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs mostly clear.
2. Cook the congee
Add the rice and water (or broth) to a small pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce to low heat. Let the rice simmer for about 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally. The rice will break down and become soft and creamy.
3. Cook/prepare the beef and carrot
- Simmer beef in water until tender (15–20 minutes for chuck/shank, 25–30 minutes for brisket).
- Steam or boil the carrot until soft.
- Placed beef and carrot in a baby blender.
4. Add beef and carrot
Stir in the shredded beef and mashed carrot. Cook for another 2–3 minutes until well combined.
5. Adjust the texture
If the congee is too thick, add warm water, breast milk, or formula until it reaches a smooth porridge consistency.
6. Cool before serving
Let it cool slightly before feeding your baby.
