A Gentle Asian Rice Porridge for Babies
If you’re looking for a simple and nourishing first meal for your baby, chicken congee is a perfect choice. Congee is a traditional Asian rice porridge that becomes soft, creamy, and easy for babies to swallow. Because the rice cooks down into a smooth texture, it’s ideal for babies who are just starting solids.
This baby chicken congee is mild, nutritious, and naturally comforting. The slow-cooked rice creates a silky porridge while the chicken adds gentle protein for growing babies. It’s also easy to adjust the texture as your baby grows.
Many Asian families introduce congee early because it’s easy to digest, hydrating, and very versatile. You can also add vegetables later as your baby becomes more comfortable with solids.
Baby Chicken Congee Recipe
Age: 6+ months
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 15-20 minutes
Texture: Smooth creamy porridge
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons uncooked white rice
- 1 cup water
- 2 tablespoons cooked chicken breast (or thigh)
- 1–2 tablespoons warm water, breast milk, or formula (optional for thinning)
- (optional garnish) finely chopped green onions
Optional additions:
- mashed carrot
- mashed sweet potato
- finely chopped spinach
Instructions
- Rinse the rice
Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs mostly clear. - Cook the congee
Add the rice and water to a small pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce to low heat. Let the rice simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. The rice will break down and become soft and creamy. - Blend/ shred the chicken
Finely shred the chicken or use a baby food blender. I’ve been loving this baby blender, currently popular in the Chinese social media and posts. - Add chicken
Stir in the finely shredded cooked chicken and cook for another 2–3 minutes. - Adjust the texture
If the congee is too thick, add warm water, breast milk, or formula until it reaches a smooth porridge consistency. - Cool before serving
Let it cool slightly before feeding your baby.
Texture Guide for Babies
7–8 months: Blend until very smooth.
